9 Facts About Driving Under the Influence

Did you know that Traffic accidents are the leading cause of death for teens, and roughly 1/3 of these accidents involve alcohol or another substance. Via dosomething.org here are some facts about driving under the influence:

  1. Impairment is not reliant upon the type of alcohol consumed, rather the number of drinks over a certain period of time. Despite myths and misconceptions, coffee, a cold shower, or exercise will not make a person more sober; only time will.
  2. On average, a drunk driver will drive 80 times under the influence before their first arrest.
  3. Every 51 minutes in America, someone is killed in a drunk driving crash. That equates to 27 people every day. Offer to be your parents’ designated driver to ensure that everybody gets home safe.
  4. For drivers under 21, the U.S. has a No Tolerance policy that does not allow any alcohol to be in the blood system while behind the wheel. The consequences could include expensive fines, loss of license or jail.
  5. Someone is injured in a drunk driving incident every 120 seconds.
  6. Between 50 to 75% of the people who have had their licenses revoked due to driving under the influence drive illegally without their license.
  7. Traffic accidents are the leading cause of death for teens, and roughly 1/3 of these accidents involve alcohol or another substance.
  8. Since the early 1980s, alcohol-related traffic deaths per population have been cut in half with the greatest proportional declines among persons 16-20 years old.
  9. Kids and teens who get involved with alcohol at a young age are 7 times more likely to be involved in an alcohol-related crash in their lives.

Tips to Prevent Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI) at Your Computer

Your hands perform a variety of tasks every day, from typing on a keyboard to texting on your phone. These repetitive motions can create weakness and stiffness in your wrists and fingers.
Practicing simple exercises can help prevent injury. Exercises can strengthen your wrists and keep hands and fingers flexible.

What is RSI?
In simple medical terms, repetitive strain injury (RSI) is defined as a cumulative trauma disorder (CTD) stemming from prolonged repetitive, forceful, or awkward hand movements. The result is damage to muscles, tendons, and nerves of the neck, shoulder, forearm, and hand, which can cause pain, weakness, numbness, or impairment of motor control.

Try these proper typing techniques to reduce the rise of wrist pain.

  • Keep your wrists straight: The straighter your wrists, the less strain you put on the tendons and nerves.
  • Consult a Doctor: There are a variety of causes for hand pain, and the appropriate treatment will depend on the type you have. Your doctor may recommend wearing a hand brace or acupuncture and possibly a change in diet to reduce the pain.
  • Lowering your wrist: Surprisingly something that seems so simple can cause so much trouble, but simply lowering your wrist repeatedly while typing is enough to irritate cause a Repetitive Stress Injury.
  • Don’t strain your fingers: When you need to press a hard-to-reach key, like CTRL, SHIFT, BACKSPACE, etc., don’t stretch out your pinky. Instead, move your whole hand and use your index or middle finger to press the key. Don’t use one hand when you need to hit two keys simultaneously, e.g. CTRL-X, SHIFT-Y. Think before you type: unnecessary retyping/editting can add up. Use a light touch when typing: don’t pound the keys.

The combination of a break program, an ergonomic keyboard/mouse and posture can make all the difference.

What do you do if caught in a flash flood? El Nino may be coming, be prepared!

We have all been experiencing the great California drought, however, relief may be on its way. There is the possibility of powerful, drenching rainstorms and though this is good for our state, trouble may arise. The good news is we all have time to prepare and inform others of how to stay safe. Here are some tips if you find you are caught in a flash flood.

  • If you are in a low-lying area during a flood, get to higher ground quickly. Avoid canyons, washes or ditches that can channel swift water.
  • Do not attempt to cross flooded roads or streams on foot. The water may be flowing more rapidly than it appears, and it can take as little as six inches of water to knock an adult off their feet.
  • Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to see flood dangers.
  • Never allow children to play near ditches and storm drains.
  • If your vehicle is suddenly caught in rising water, leave it immediately and seek higher ground.
  • If your car is swept into the water and submerged, DON’T PANIC! Stay calm and wait for the vehicle to fill with water. Once the vehicle is full, the doors will be able to open. Hold your breath and swim to the surface.
  • If you are swept into fast moving floodwater outside of your car, point your feet downstream. Always go over obstacles, never try to go under.
  • If you are stranded on something above the floodwater, such as a tree or building, stay put and wait for rescue. Do not enter the floodwater.
  • When help arrives, stay calm and follow the directions of the rescue team.

Moments after a slip and fall accident, here is what you need to know

Slip and fall accidents are scary because they can happen anytime and anywhere. You or a friend may be in a store, apartment building, parking lot or shopping for groceries when it happens. It is unexpected and will catch you off guard. Make sure you know your rights and who is on your side.

If you are injured in a store, you will likely find yourself pursued by their insurance company or claims management looking for you to give them all the evidence they need to defeat your claim.  You may be in a state of panic since you just had a horrible experience and may not even know the full extent of your injuries. The insurance company is not on your side, so before you answer make sure you know your rights. The first steps to take after a slip and fall accident are crucial as they can help build your case.

  1. SEEK MEDICAL HELP:  This is top priority, so make sure you seek medical attention and your bills will help as proof in your case.
  2. INSURANCE COMPANY: Do NOT give the insurance company a recorded statement
  3. REPORT THE INCIDENT: Make sure you report the incident to a property manager or manager of the store. They should file an incident report and again this is good proof for your case.
  4. DOCUMENT WHAT HAPPENED: Photograph the scene and your injuries. Photos are exceptional proof in your case.
  5. GATHER ATTIRE: Put your clothes and shoes into  ziplock bag and do not wash or clean.
  6. CONTACT AN ATTORNEY: Since many slip and fall cases are difficult to prove, you need the resources of a successful law firm. Contact us TODAY to discuss your options.

Halloween and Fall Back is one of the most dangerous weekends of the year

Halloween is one of the most dangerous days of the year and it is important to be prepared. Last year 4 pedestrians were killed on halloween night and this year the prediction is higher.

By now you have the pumpkins carved and kids costumes ready, but have you given them a safety talk? It is important to take the time to sit the kids aside and go over safety rules as well as be prepared if you are driving on halloween. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the evening hours tend to be the deadliest time on the road and for pedestrians.

To stay safe, on Halloween, NHTSA offers the following tips:

For Motorists

  • Use caution while behind the wheel.
    • Slow down and be alert in residential areas.
    • Enter and exit driveways and alleys carefully.
    • Eliminate distractions so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings.
  • Drive sober or get pulled over.
    • Always designate a sober driver and plan a way to safely get home at the end of the night if you plan on celebrating Halloween with alcohol.
    • Use your community’s sober ride program or take a taxi, call a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation.
    • If you see a drunk driver on the road, contact local law enforcement.
    • If you know someone who is about to drive or ride while impaired, take their keys and help them make safe travel arrangements to where they are going.

For Pedestrians

  • Walking impaired can be just as dangerous as drunk driving. Designate a sober friend to walk you home.
  • Help keep kids safe.
    • Children out at night and under the age of 12 should have adult supervision.
    • Kids should stick to familiar areas that are well lit and trick-or-treat in groups.
    • Choose face paint when possible instead of masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision.
    • Decorate costumes with reflective tape and have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights.
    • Always cross the street at corners, using traffic sign and crosswalks, and look left, right and left again when crossing and keep looking as you cross.

Last year in Orange County, California four little girls were killed. They were in the crosswalk when a fast-moving Honda CR-V plowed into them, then sped away, according to police and witnesses.

It was the first of two fatal incidents involving pedestrians in Orange County on Halloween. Some 10 miles away in Irvine, about 30 minutes after the girls were hit, a 65-year-old man was trick-or-treating with his 4-year-old son when a Mazda struck them. The man was killed; the boy was rushed to a trauma center, where he was in critical condition.

Please be careful, prepare your children, take a flashlight and wear bright clothes. Have a safe and happy halloween!

California unveils amnesty program for unpaid traffic tickets

An amnesty program taking effect immediatly will enable millions of Californians with long-unpaid traffic tickets to pay them off at a discount and get their licenses back. Did you know more than 4 million Californians had their driver’s licenses suspended from 2006 to 2013 because they didn’t pay their fines on time or missed their court date, the senator said. That resulted in $10 billion in fines. Effective immediately, Californians will be allowed to challenge most routine traffic tickets without having to first pay the contested fines under a bill signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown.

The bill on traffic tickets is in response to widespread complaints that the current system lacks due process and that many motorists cannot afford to pay escalating court costs and can lose the use of their car if their license is suspended, making it harder to go to work or school. In an interview via LA Times, Sen Robert Hertzberg (D- Van Nuys) who introduced the bill said  “The system was broken. Is it reasonable or fair to require the poor to pay a huge fine before getting a hearing? I say no, and I’m grateful the governor agreed.” Be aware that there are a few things you should know about:

About the amnesty

Who’s eligible?

People with tickets for which the fines were due by Jan. 1, 2013, and who haven’t made a payment after June 24, 2015, can get a payment discount of 50 to 80 percent and their driver’s license reinstated. Anyone who made a payment after June 24 can’t get a discount on any unpaid balance, but may be able to get their license reinstated.

Who’s not eligible?

People who owe victim restitution on a case or have certain misdemeanor or felony warrants. Parking tickets and citations for drunken or reckless driving are not covered.

How much is the discount?

Any civil assessments are deducted. Of the remaining balance, the discount will be 80 percent for those who make 125 percent or less than the federal poverty level — $14,712 for an individual, or $30,312 for a family of four — or who receive public assistance. For everyone else, the discount will be 50 percent.

How do I apply?

Contact the Superior Court in the county where the ticket was issued. People who are eligible will have their application processed without seeing a judge.

Employee Perks That Attract The Best Talent

Via Forbes.com

Companies offer many perks, but what are the best? How do you know what your employees really want and what will entice them to really enjoy their jobs feeling rewarded.  Many perks are expensive and sometimes impractical. Don’t worry, the goal is not to implement all of them. Forbes put together a list of perks that are important to employees and the culture.

1. Unlimited PTO: Although it may seem a little counterintuitive, unlimited paid time off actually boosts productivity here at Lendio. When people are trusted with the decision of how much time to take off, they make sure their work get’s done. When employees feel that you trust them, they are more likely to stick around.

2. Profit Sharing: Whether this be a quarterly bonus or it’s doled out at the end of the year, profit sharing will get your employees invested in your company’s success. When people feel a direct benefit from your company’s profitability, they work harder and more efficient.

3. Gym Membership: According to the Harvard Business Review, employee wellness programs should be seen as a strategic move, and not just a benefit. Healthy employees cost you less, and they work harder. Not only that, they’re happier, and they’re more likely to form bonds with co-workers. If you want your employees to stick around, here’s a great way to do it.

4. Extra time off around the holidays: Let’s face it, the holidays are an extremely busy time for everyone. If you’re business slows down around the holidays, you might as well give your employees time off. They’re going to like working there more, and they’re going to have more energy to start the New Year off right.

5. Free On-Site Spa Services: If your company is big enough, having an in-house masseuse can be a great way to reduce stress around your company. When your employees stress levels are high, they’re more likely to make mistakes. Spa services are a great way to bring down that stress level.

6. Maternity and Paternity leave beyond that required by law: A great way to show your employees that work-life balance is a high priority at your company is to give extended maternity and paternity leaves. When parents are able to spend time with their kids, they come back rejuvenated and with a new sense of purpose.

7. Drink fridge: Here at Lendio, we have a fridge full of drinks for employees. This doesn’t seem like much, but it can really help everyone out. This way they get that boost of energy, don’t have to run out to go get drinks, andthey feel more at home in the office. Continue reading.

A pain in the neck – why you should never ignore whiplash symptons

All too often, people who have suffered whiplash, a back injury or other injury in a car accident do not get prompt medical attention. They ignore their pain, or self-medicate, hoping that their injury will go away. This approach is potentially harmful in two ways: It may result in the injury growing worse. And it makes getting insurance compensation more difficult, if not impossible.

Whiplash starts to develop within 12 to 24 hours after the trauma. The first symptom of whiplash is stiffness and discomfort in the neck. If you notice that you can’t move your neck to the side or touch your chest with your chin, you might develop whiplash within a few hours. Another common symptom of this injury is pain at the base of the skull. This occurs, usually, because of inflammation. Other common symptoms of whiplash include the following: dizziness, insomnia, inability to concentrate, weird sensation in the ears and vision impairment. People with severe cases of whiplash are unable to move their head due to discomfort, have pain in their shoulders and experience numbness in the arms. If you have some of those symptoms, it’s important to seek immediate medical help.

If your pain is not going away or is preventing you from working, don’t wait — see your doctor as soon as possible. And call Sariol Legal Center at 866-953-1995 to find out how we can help you. If you do not have health insurance, we can refer you to a doctor who will treat you, with costs to be paid for from the settlement or award you receive.

Insurance companies are notorious for denying claims involving so-called soft tissue injuries. At Sariol Legal Center, we have a record of success in these and other car accident cases — and we do not back down in the face of insurance company intransigence. California whiplash injury attorney Frank Sariol and staff will work diligently to help you get all of the medical care and compensation you deserve.
