Nissan North America, Inc. is recalling 3.5 million vehicles due to problems with the software used to determine when to deploy the front passenger air bag, according to documents released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Friday. In a safety recall notice submitted to the NHTSA, the company said software in nearly 3.2 million vehicles failed to correctly note when an adult sat in the front seat, either classifying the person as a child or as not sitting in the seat at all. The defect keeps the passenger air bag from deploying in the case of an accident. So far, Nissan has reported three injuries related to this defect, but no fatalities. The new recall includes vehicles from the 2013-2017 model years, including but not limited to:

  • Leaf
  • Murano
  • Nissan Altima
  • Sentra
  • NV200
  • Rogue
  • Infiniti JX35/QX60, and Q50

The automaker has said it is in the process of developing its remedy plan and will begin notifying dealers in late May. The recall includes 3.1 million vehicles in the U.S. and about 320,000 vehicles outside of the U.S. Nissan said it will either reprogram or replace the sensor, which is located in  the seat frame. Customers affected by the recall will receive initial notification letters that will be followed by another letter when a remedy is available in their area.
